The Point bar
End the afternoon at the "Point Bar" and prepare yourself for the evening while you enjoy the best cocktails in the world listening to some soothing sounds. El Galleon cottages afford the peace and tranquility of private rooms nestled amongst palm trees with the crystal clear waters of the Philippine sea only a stone throw away. Walking between Sabang and Small Lalaguna Beach, you can't fail to miss The Point. In fact, many visitors to Puerto, once they've found The Point, find it hard to escape. So what is The Point? To call It simply a bar is understating its potential. While not really a restaurant either, it is actually a part of the excellent El Galleon Beach Resort and therefore serves the same sumptuous menu on offer at the resort. Its not a night-club either, although the amount of hard liquor consumed in the form of SHOOTERS, a house specialty, is often staggering. in which state many of the patrons may also be found after a long night there.

You really couldn't call it a watering hole as, although it is surrounded on three sides by water, few, if any, of the guests ever drink water there. Its certainly not a disco, as that particular brand of music is not permitted within its confines, though to be honest it is not unusual to find frenzied revelers dancing wildly on occasion. Main Host, Allan Nash, popular PADI Course Director and Asia Divers Entrepreneur, has created a truly unique entertainment concept at The Point, one which packs them in night after night. Situated above Asia Divers' most recent Dive Centre (they have 2 in the immediate vicinity), The Point is at once sophisticated yet simple, a center of entertainment and relaxation. On a recent visit, we found two Hongkong Lawyers, a senior Lufthansa executive and his family, a Banker, three yacht owners, a variety of tourists of all nationalities and a gaggle of SCUBA instructors from several different local dive centers mixing it up. Its easy to make friends at The Point. The adjacent El Galleon Beach Resort, with the best views on the island from its upper rooms, is the ideal family get-away, with a variety of aircon and fans rooms to suit most budgets. Unlike The Point, peace, tranquillity, privacy and lush, tropical surroundings are the order of the day here. A resident, somewhat peripatetic French Chef provides a mouth-watering melange of Continental and Asian cuisine to satisfy the most discerning palates, as well as a great deal of amusement when provoked.

After a hard day's diving, swimming, sailing, hiking or bronzing in Puerto Galera, there's really no better place to unwind. And that, dear reader, is exactly The Point.

 El Galleon Restaurant

How To Get Here
Private Transfer
Direct Private Transport to/from Manila
This is the quickest and most convenient way to reach here. It is tailored to suit your required travel times and can be scheduled any time day or night. It consists of a car 2 – 2 ½ hour a/c car/van journey from Manila to Lea Beachfollowed by an hour by boat directly to El Galleon Pier. Total journey time usually 3 – 3 ½ hours.

"We strongly reccommend that you have read through the directions carefully and PRINT THEM OUT to bring with you - even if you have done the journey before - we are constantly trying to update and improve the service we provide."

Directions for pick up from the International Airport, Manila:
We need your flight number and arrival time to book this as well as the number of people in the group Asia Divers and El Galleon Beach Resort offer a special assistance program for our guests arriving at the airport. This requires 48 hours notice of arrival. As you leave the plane a representative from the Department of Tourism will be waiting to meet you – they will walk you through immigration and customs and to the waiting car/van. [In the unlikely event that weather prevents the boat from crossing to pick you up the car will take you to the ‘Alpha Hotel' in Batangas where we'll contact you to arrange the boat ASAP] In the event that you can not give us enough notice of your arrival or for any reason you are not met:

Walk through the customs area and go outside the airport. You will be standing on the ‘arrival terminal access road'. Look across the road and you will see two ramps (signs point to the 'arrival extension area') – one going down to your left, one to your right. Walk across the road and go down the ramp on your LEFT hand side. When you reach the bottom you will be at another access road. Stay on the side of the road that you are when you reach the bottom of the ramp. At the bottom of the ramp you should see the letter "A" sign, stand under this and look across the road. There are barriers in place, behind which you will see lots of people waiting for friends and relatives. Walk down the road looking across the street for someone wearing an Asia Divers T-shirt and carrying an Asia Divers ‘transfer sign' with your name.

Identify yourself and be prepared that at this stage you may have to leave the luggage trolley behind for a short walk to the car. The aircon car/van will take you directly to Lea Beach (ask the driver if you wish to stop for food, drinks or toilet. There are plenty of MacDonalds and other fast food places as well as "Shell Stations" on the way down). Tip the driver as you see fit, otherwise do not give him any money. All our cars carry cellular phones. At Lea Beach the car/van will stop very close to your waiting boat. There are no porters on the pier – these people earn their living by carrying the bags from the cars to the boat. The boat crew work for us and will take you directly to ‘The Point' (Small Lalaguna) where there will be someone from the resort to meet you (again, they work directly for us, your bags will be safely looked after, tip them as you see fit). All the boats have marine radios. You should pay for the boat and car on arrival at El Galleon [you should not pay anything beyond tips to the driver or boatmen whilst you are on route].

Cost one way, [total, not per person] for car/van and boat in US$:
1-6 people  120.00
7-12 people  181.00
Bus upto 21 and boat  280.00
Car/Van only - one way  61.00
Boat only - one way  P3,000
Seaplane upto 3 people one way  400.00

* All return transport is arranged while you are here through the cashier at El Galleon.

Directions to Lea Beach

Lea Beach is not far from the Shell Refinery on the East side of Batangas Bay. In more detail: If you go to the last exit on the South Superhighway, and turn right, you only have to drive a few km before you will see a large green sign on your right pointing to the new STAR TOLLWAY to Batangas. This puts you on to a beautiful new road (okay, it is actually quite bumpy for a brand new road). This road now ends just past Lipa, putting you back onto the old road a few km south of McDonald's, and just before San Fernando army/air force base on the right hand side.

Approaching Batangas City, make the next left turn after the "Lions Monument". Drive to the next intersection on your left, turn and take the next left again and head up till you see the sign for Lobo, SM Mall and the Shell Refinery. From there you have 9.2km to Lea Beach if you want to check your trip meter. Take the next right, following the signs to SM Mall, Lobo and the Shell Refinery, on the way you will cross a bridge, shortly after you will see the Portofino Hotel. Before arriving at the hotel you will see a Y intersection that will take you to the new SM Mall, drive past the mall, past the Shell station and keep left, keeping a lookout for the Shell Refinery and Pacific Flour Mills. Pass the Shell Refinery, and beware of the two speed bumps near the Flour Mill gates. Take the small dirt road on the right immediately at the end of the Flour Mill fence (about 100 meters after the second speed bump) and you are there (look for the Asia Divers/El Galleon transfer sign).

Puerto Galera

History

The Spaniards discovered Puerto Galera in the early 16th century as a safe haven for their trade ships during heavy squalls and typhoons; the words literally mean ‘Port of the Galleons’. Legend has it that once sailors arrived on the island; they never wanted to leave without a promise to come back…

Puerto Galera, one of the oldest settlements of the religious missionaries, was founded in 1574 as the original capital of Mindoro. Originally, the town was located at the Lagundian, now a "sitio", chosen by the Spanish authorities as the provincial capital due to its excellent harbor and natural beauty. But due to its susceptibility to moro raids, the Spaniards were forced to transfer the town from the Lagundian to the present site, which they named Puerto Galera. The town was popularly known as "Puerto Galera" (Port of the Galleons). Spanish galleons coming from Mexico and Spain used the presence of an excellent port or berthing place to take refuge during stormy weather before proceeding to Manila. The mountains and the good harbor nearby served the Spaniards well as shields from the moro pirates and other marauders. Several guard houses and watch towers were built at the top of the surrounding mountains. The biggest was constructed at Dampalitan Point, north of the town facing Batangas Channel. Public and Military headquarters, hospitals, warehouses and a convent made of stone were also erected through the efforts of both the church and the state. A wharf was also built at Muelle Bay. Adjacent to this stood a warehouse for rice, which caught fire one night. It is widely believed that the charcoaled grains, popularly known as "black rice", till remain scattered at the shores of Muelle up to this day.

In 1837, the seat of government was transferred to Calapan due to the suitable agricultural plains and the Spaniards opted to stay there. When Puerto Galera was no longer the seat of the government, the Spanish government officials left the town and only the friars remained. A "cabesa" or "capitan del pueblo" was then appointed by the "governador" to collect the tributes or taxes from the people and to maintain peace and order. Among the heads of the town called "gobernadorcillos" who became famous were Jose Salamat, Juan Quinto, Aguido Cobarrubias and Hilarion Axalan. Guarding the coasts of Puerto Galera was a Spanish warship, named "Ca๑onero Mariveles". However, on November 18, 1879, the ill-fated battleship was hit by a powerful storm, which caused it to sink outside the West Coast of Muelle. As a tribute to the lost ship and its crew, a wooden cross was erected right at the center of Muelle with the following inscription: "Ultima tierra que pesaron los tripolantes del Ca๑onero Mariveles el 18 de Noviembre de 1879, Memoria de sus campa๑ero". As one of the greatest relics of the past century, this cross was renovated in 1938 by a Spanish national named Luis Gomez y Sotto.

Revolutionaries from Puerto Galera participated in the overthrow of the Spanish Government in Mindoro in 1898 -1900 under the leadership of brothers Miguel and Estanislao Cobarrubias Sr. During the American regime, a military governor by the name Captain Robert Offley was appointed. On November 2, 1902, Puerto Galera was again made the capital of the province until 1903. It was annexed to Calapan in 1905 as a barrio represented by Hilarion Axalan in the Calapan town council in 1916. In 1919 it was made a municipal district with Isidro Suzara as "municipal president". On February 21, 1928, Under Act. No. 3415, it was organized into an independent municipality with Anacleto Atienza as first "municipal presidente". Estanislao Cobarrubias Sr. was the last "municipal presidente" of the civil government and the first municipal mayor of the commonwealth government.

On February 27, 1942, the Japanese air force and naval auxiliary occupied the town. Leoncio Axalan, who was supposed to end his term as mayor in 1942, was made to extend his term until 1946 because of his courage and integrity. It was indeed a great test for a man to run the affairs of the municipal government amidst the warring parties, the guerrillas and the Japanese. After the liberation in 1946, then Governor Arturo Ignacio appointed Rafael Garcia as the municipal mayor of Puerto Galera. In 1948, Estanislao Brucal, an officer of the guerrilla unit in Mindoro during the Japanese occupation, became the first elected municipal mayor of Puerto Galera under the Republican form of Government. In 1972, during the third term of Mayor Rogelio Cataquis, the sitios of Sto. Ni๑o and Villaflor were created and organized into regular barangays together with the recognition of Poblacion as a duly organized barangay. On December 26, 1973, PD 354 was issued by then President Ferdinand E. Marcos making Puerto Galera a reservation area under the Man and Biosphere Program of the UNESCO. Today, the beautiful and scenic Puerto Galera is the center of tourism in this province, making full use of its long line of white beaches and its abundant flora and fauna.
